Karan Johar slammed Kettan Singh for mimicking him in ‘poor taste’.Snehil Dixit Mehra aka BC Aunty feels it’s the performers who’re always at the receiving end of backlash. She adds how being a comic has become risky today.Last night, Karan Johar took to Instagram and shared a story expressing his disappointment over the ‘promo of a reality comedy show on a supposedly respectable channel’ that featured a comic mimicking him, which the filmmaker thought was in ‘exceptionally poor taste’. “I expect this from trolls and faceless and nameless people but when your own industry can disrespect someone who has been in the business for over 25 years it speaks volumes about the times we live in…this doesn’t even anger me it just makes me sad!” he wrote. Soon, netizens figured that Karan was hinting at comedian Kettan Singh’s set in Madness Machayenge – India Ko Hasayenge that sees Huma Qureshi donning the hat of ‘madness ki malkin’. And earlier today, Kettan apologised to Karan, adding that his intention was not to hurt him. Now, in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, another comedian from the show, Snehil Dixit Mehra, who is popularly known as BC Aunty, reacts to the row. The influencer, whose video interaction with Karan for Bigg Boss OTT in 2021, gained a lot of traction, says that while the idea to offend someone isn’t intentional, things often go awry. “Doing comedy in today’s day and age is very, very risky because some videos are taken out of context and then they don’t make sense. It’s very tricky being a comedian,” she tells us. Talking about what entails the script-writing process for each set on Madness Machayenge, she says, “With a show like this, there are lots of teams involved like writers, producers and the channel team. Additionally, there are compliances, standards and procedures to follow. We, as performers, get a certain script and we need to stick to it.” According to her, it’s the performers who are at the forefront of a comic set and that’s why they’re the ones receiving backlash. “And sometimes, in the process, you tend to lose that filter because you realise that there’s an entire legal system and people taking care of the same. So, as a performer, you feel that you just need to get on stage and perform. But when it comes to backlash, it’s the actors and the performers who’re at the receiving end of this. Kettan is getting all the backlash. He has an issued an apology too,” she says. As for Snehil, she believes in not encouraging jokes intended to fat shame people on the show and avoid any kind of criticism. “We do a lot of fat jokes. What I try to do is while we’re reading our scripts, I tell them to remove any such jokes if I think they’re offensive because I’m not okay with it. Some of them are fun and generate laughter but then, there are also a few that might hurt sentiments. I try and steer clear from them. Yet whenever something like this happens, it’s the performers who receive backlash,” she elaborates. Titas ChowdhuryTitas Chowdhury is a senior sub-editor at News18 Showsha.
