The Nevada athletic department closed the gap on UNLV in this year’s Silver State Series, but it was not enough to catch the Wolf Pack’s southern rivals. After Nevada won back-to-back Silver State Series in 2020-21 and 2021-22, UNLV clinched last year’s all-sport competition in dominant fashion, recording a 31.5-16.5 victory, the third largest margin of win since the challenge was created in 2012-13. This year, the best Nevada can do with three remaining points is tie UNLV, which owns the tiebreaker (the winner of the Battle for the Fremont Cannon football game).UNLV has now won nine out of 12 competitions between the schools since this competition was launched in 2012 by then-Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, who is now UNR’s president. Originally named the Governor’s Series, this competition established a formal head-to-head athletic and academic challenge between the longtime rivals, the only two Division I departments in Nevada. It was rebranded to the Silver State Series in 2018.Three points are available in each sport Nevada and UNLV sponsor with three points also available for each department’s Academic Progress Report. In the case of ties, each school gets 1.5 points. Here is a breakdown of this year’s results:UNLV wins (21 points)Football (45-27); women’s soccer (1-0 win); women’s swim and dive (won regular-season and conference); women’s basketball (wins of 92-47 and 98-67); women’s indoor track and field (UNLV sixth, Nevada seventh); women’s tennis (won regular-season and conference); women’s golf (UNLV second, Nevada fifth)Nevada wins (18 points)Women’s cross country (Nevada eighth, UNLV 10th); men’s basketball (wins of 69-66 and 75-65); men’s tennis (4-3); men’s golf (Nevada fifth, UNLV seventh); women’s outdoor track and field (Nevada fourth; UNLV seventh); softball (series tied 2-2; Nevada wins tiebreaker with MW Tournament win)Split (three points each)Volleyball (series split at 1-1); Baseball (series split at 3-3)To be awarded (three points)Academic Progress Report (TBD)That puts UNLV at 24 points and Nevada at 21 points with the only remaining points to be awarded being the three for the Academic Progress Report scores. If Nevada were to win those, UNLV would claim the tiebreaker victory.
