Math fest
The Humboldt Math Festival is celebrating its 15th “Community Celebration of Mathematics” on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Adorni Center, 1011 Waterfront Drive in Eureka.
The free festival explores science, technology, engineering, art and math and features hands-on fun with puzzles, games, contests, demos and make-and-take activities. People of all ages are invited to attend.
Presenters include educators from local schools, as well as College of the Redwoods and Cal Poly Humboldt. Students from Academy of the Redwoods, Sunny Brae Middle School, Fortuna Middle School, Arcata High School and Cub Scouts Pack 95 will be sharing make-and-take and hands-on activities.
Also on hand will be representatives from the Cal Poly Natural History Museum, Redwood Discovery Museum, Humboldt Library, Green Diamond Resource Company, First 5 Humboldt, Canopy Offshore Wind and the Kinetic Universe. Pancakes here
A pancake breakfast will be served May 5 from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Freshwater Grange, 48 Grange Road, Freshwater.
The menu includes buttermilk and whole-grain pancakes, ham, sausage, scrambled eggs, apple compote, orange juice, tea and French roast coffee. Top your eggs with homemade salsa and cheese.
Weavers meet
The Humboldt Handweavers and Spinners Guild will meet May 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wharfinger Building, 1 Marina Way, Eureka. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available at 6:45 p.m.
Janice Sullivan will present a program titled “Weaving a Life.” She will present a history of her work, which includes large wall pieces that explore double-weave and multi-tensioned fabrics. Other exhibited works will display various weave structures and also incorporate painted warps, double weave and Theo Moormon techniques.
Sullivan has been a student and educator of textile arts for 40 years. Her work is displayed locally and nationally in many corporate and private collections. She currently conducts workshops through Pacific Textile Arts in Fort Bragg.
Book club
The Forest Defense Book Club will meet May 21 at 7 p.m. at the Cal Poly Humboldt Library (meet in the front of the library).
Members meet once a month to discuss books that help them learn and imagine together around the topic of land defense. All are welcome. This month, the book club will be discussing “The Ghost Forest” by Greg King, Chapters 1 and 2. For more information, email [email protected].
