Buffalo Grove’s latest contract renewal with waste hauler WM – or Waste Management – is in effect as of May 1 and includes a rate increase for services for the first time in years, according to village officials.
“While no one likes an increase, the fee adjustment keeps BG’s rates below our comparable communities with the high quality of service we’ve come to expect. WM has been a long-term partner, hauling BG’s waste for over 30 years,” village officials wrote in the town’s electronic newsletter.
Officials say inflation and the increased cost of doing business are the main reasons for the rate bump. According to a fee chart on the village website, rates for garbage pickup and recycling range from $18.21 to $25.78 and include fees paid to Solid Waste Agency of Cook County.
Additionally, the rate increase is about .91 cents – but more for additional services and pickups, officials explained. The current contract is for three years and rates are expected to increase in the second and third years of the agreement.

Officials explained that average services include garbage and recycling pickup, At Your Door special collections – for household hazardous waste and electronics – and mixed organics collection. The latter is co-mingled food scraps and yard waste, the newsletter explains.
“The village was able to negotiate the addition of food scrap composting to the service mix, tackling one more piece of the garbage pile and strengthening BG’s commitment to sustainability,” village officials stated in the newsletter.
