Jay Soni, known for working in hit TV shows like Sasural Genda Phool, Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi and Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, is one of the most popular TV actors in the industry. However, after almost two decades on the small screen, he is now ready to play more complicated and grey characters. The 37-year-old is ready to experiment with genres and “get out of his comfort zone.” In a recent interview, Jay Soni expressed his wish to take up negative roles and how he has now become selective about his projects. He told ETimes, “When I started, I did everything that came my way. I wanted to play characters that allowed me to perform and not just be like a mannequin in the show. When I realised that it was the right time to explore other mediums, I started becoming selective.”Further expressing his wish to take a break from the “good boy image”, Jay Soni said, “Even today, I am open to doing television shows, provided my character is different from what I have done earlier, or what other leads have done.” He is keen on playing a “spoiled brat or a Casanova”. The ITA Award-winning actor highlighted the importance of having good showrunners and asserted that if the makers are good then the actor and the script will be in good hands which means “80% of your battle is won.” The seasoned actor argued that the television industry is here to stay, despite competition from OTT platforms. Expressing his confidence in the TV industry, he reasoned, “For any medium to run successfully, maintaining quality is important, which TV has done successfully. I don’t think OTT can take over, as television is here to stay.” Jay Soni hails from Navsari in Gujarat and has dabbled in Gujarati cinema. In 2018 he acted in Lamboo Rastoo, a Gujarati musical drama film. He shared the screen with veteran actors like Shrenu Parikh, Manoj Joshi and Anang Desai. It will be interesting to see how his career unfolds as he prepares to play the antagonist.Chirag SehgalChirag Sehgal works as a Sub-Editor in the Entertainment team at News18.com.
